Training Services –A Cornerstone of Success
Successful agencies know that training is the most effective way to produce consistent, predictable and reliable judgment and behavior across a wide variety of employees. The FMRT Group develops specialized training to develop new knowledge and to ensure the consistent application of policies, procedures, decision-making, and personnel management.
Training Topics Include:
“Managing Generation Y” Officers included in Generation Y are those that were born between 1978-2000. These young officers have been described by their supervisors as difficult to manage, challenging of authority, and resistant to the use of official hierarchy. This workshop will focus on increasing supervisors’ ability to better manager Generation Y officers. Officers in this workshop learn: a) Understanding Generation Y, what their needs are, and how to motivate them; b) Specific communication techniques for this group; and c) Specific management techniques for this group.
“Improved Decision Making Skills / Ethics” Unlike many occupations, the law enforcement professional is at times placed in situations that are without the benefit of accessible supervision and often without any clear written guidelines regarding specific alternatives. Conditions such as these require the law enforcement professional to make decisions based on training, instinct, and common sense. For these reasons, Decision Making Skills Training, as well as ongoing training in the area of judgment and ethics is necessary, particularly when applied to law enforcement activities.
“Managing Disordered Offenders” Given the changes in public mental health across the state, offenders with mental health problems represent particular challenges to law enforcement. These offenders can be particularly difficult to manage without specific training and insight into their disordered behavior. The more information an officer has regarding these offenders and their behaviors, the better s/he will be able to execute his/her duties as a law enforcement officer. Officers in this workshop learn: a) How to identify mentally disordered offenders on the street; b) Effective ways to approach mentally disordered offenders; and c) Effective ways to manage mentally disordered offenders.
“Using Bio-Data Effectively” The effective acquisition and interpretation of biographical data is one of the most effective predictors of future performance as a law enforcement officer. Understanding its significance and meaning allows those responsible for selection and training to identify strong candidates, maximize their training, and reduce departmental turn-over. Overall, this leads to the development of more successful officers and stronger departments. Officers in this workshop learn: a) Bio-data factors that predict the probability of success as a law enforcement officer; b) Bio-data factors that predict the probability of failure as a law enforcement officer; and c) How to interpret these factors effectively.
“Peer Counseling” Law enforcement co-workers trained to recognize and address the needs of each other create healthy and supportive agency cultures that decrease incidences of administrative actions. Peer-to-peer support also provides a network of response following critical incidents, line of duty deaths, and personal problems impacting work performance. Workshop participants: a) Learn about the relatively informal peer counseling model; b) Become aware about specific personal and work stressors; c) Gain basic skills in understanding and addressing specific work stressors; and d) Receive resources for promoting peer counseling in their individual agency.
“Post-Shooting Trauma” Deadly force incidents are an undesirable, yet unavoidable part of law enforcement. This workshop covers: Supervisor tips; suicide-by-cop; deadly force incidents; survivor guilt; referrals for post-shooting Fitness for Duty evaluations, departmental protection against liability, officer retention, officer/community protection, and peer counseling. Officers in this workshop learn: a) The four most frequent line-of-duty shooting scenarios; b) The “normal” stages of individuals and their departments in responding to line of duty shootings; and c) How a standardized training, evaluation, and Fitness for Duty process can benefit the individual and the department.
"Team Building" Successful law enforcement agencies have learned that team performance is often superior to the performance of individuals. Successful team formation and development is critical to achieving superior team performance. Team building focuses on the development of the specific team dynamics of trust, constructive conflict, commitment, accountability, and attention to results to achieve superior team performance.
"Community Policing" Community Policing is a collaborative effort between the police and the community that identifies problems of crime and disorder and involves all elements of the community in the search for solutions to these problems. It is founded on close, mutually beneficial ties between police and community members. Community policing offers a way for law enforcement to help re-energize our communities. Developing strong, self-sufficient communities is an essential step in creating an atmosphere in which serious crime will not flourish. Community Policing training involves the identification and practice of the methods the fortify community policing relationships.
Additional Training Services Include:
